The dusty heart of Circinus

چکیده

Active galactic nuclei play a key role in the evolution of galaxies, but their inner workings and physical connection to host are poorly understood due lack angular resolution. Infrared interferometry makes it possible resolve circumnuclear dust nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy, Circinus. Previous observations have revealed complex structures polar emission interpretation was limited simple models. MATISSE image these for first time. We observed Circinus Galaxy with VLTI/MATISSE, producing 150 correlated flux spectra 100 closure phase spectra. reconstructed images N-band at ~10 mas fit blackbody functions extinction several aperture-extracted fluxes from produce temperature distribution central dusty structures. find significant substructure dust: unresolved ~0.5 Jy, thin disk 1.9 pc diameter oriented along ~45 deg,and ~4x1.5 extending orthogonal disk. The exhibits patchiness, which we attribute clumpy dust. Flux enhancements east west seen distinguish profiles emission: shows steep gradient indicative denser material; profile is flatter, indicating clumpiness and/or lower density. fitted high temperature, ~370 K. remains warm (~200 K) out 1.5 recovered morphology resembles modeling accretion disks radiation-driven winds large scales, placed new constraints on subparsec features imaged here place active galaxies.

Spectropolarimetry of the Circinus galaxy

High quality 4500–6800 Å spectropolarimetric observations of the Circinus galaxy are reported. These show polarized and relatively broad (FWHM∼3300 km/s) Hα (as well as marginal Hβ) arising from a <3′′ (<60 pc) region centered on the nucleus and coincident with the the peak of the narrow line region. Broad Hα might also be present ∼8′′ (160 pc) SE from the nucleus and close to the dust lane, bu...

Suzaku Observations of the Circinus Galaxy

We report Suzaku observations of the active, Compton-thick Circinus galaxy. Observations were obtained with both the X-ray Imaging spectrometer (XIS) and the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD). Below 10 keV, the nuclear spectrum is dominated by radiation reflected from cold dense gas of high column density, while above 13 keV the radiation is directly transmitted nuclear emission seen through a column d...

A Chandra Observation of the Circinus Galaxy

We report on a recent Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Circinus galaxy. These observations confirm that the nuclear spectrum results from reflection of a hard X-ray continuum by “neutral” matter. The nuclear X-ray emission is extended by ∼ 60 pc in the general direction of the optical “ionization cone”. An image in the Fe Kα line has been made and shows that this emission extends up to 200 pc ...

Telescope Imaging of the Circinus Galaxy

We present an HST imaging study of the nearby (4 Mpc distant) Circinus galaxy, which contains the nearest type 2 Seyfert nucleus and prominent circumnuclear star formation. Images have been obtained in the [OIII]λ5007, Hα and H 2 v=1–0 S(1) emission lines, and in the green (5470Å), red (8140 ˚ A) and near infrared (2.04 and 2.15 µm) continua. An image in the [Fe II] λ1.644 µm line has been take...

Artillery Shells over Circinus

The recently identified Circinus Galaxy is the nearest (∼ 4 Mpc) Seyfert 2 galaxy known and we now demonstrate to be one of the best laboratories for studying the effects of nuclear activity3 on the surrounding environment. Here we present new imaging Fabry-Perot observations of Circinus which confirm the existence of an ionization cone in this object but also show for the first time a complex ...
